    Intellectual Property & Usage Rights

    Summary

You retain ownership of your reflections and personal learning data. We own the pedagogical framework (lessons, sequences, audio, UI). AI-generated content is provided for your personal learning use. Open vocabulary data (YSO, ALLFO, TERO) remains freely reusable under its upstream CC BY license.

    1. Your Reflections — You Own Them

Any text, voice recordings, or notes you capture in the Reflections section belong entirely to you. We do not claim ownership over your personal thoughts, journal entries, or self-recorded audio.

By using the Reflections feature, you grant us a limited license to:

    • Store and display your reflections back to you.
    • Run optional AI analysis (transcription, feedback, categorization) to enhance your learning experience.
    • Sync your reflections across devices linked to your account or device ID.

You can request deletion of all reflections tied to your device ID or account at any time. Upon deletion, we remove the data from active storage within 30 days.

    2. Learning Content — Our Pedagogical Work

The structured learning materials — including CEFR-levelled lessons, scope notes, concept sequencing, exercises, quiz logic, and audio recordings we produce — are our original pedagogical work.

These materials are made available to you for personal, non-commercial learning use while you use the service. This means you may:

    • Study, review, and practice with the content.
    • Export your own glossary entries for personal reference.
    • Share factual vocabulary (Finnish/Swedish words and translations) in informal educational contexts.

    You may not:

    • Republish, sell, or distribute our lesson sequences, exercises, or audio as a competing product.
    • Scrape or systematically extract our pedagogical content for training AI models.
    • Remove or alter attribution metadata from Finto-sourced vocabulary entries.

    3. AI-Generated Content

LingoXR uses AI models (via the Lovable AI Gateway, Gemini, Whisper, and ElevenLabs) to generate examples, translations, roleplay dialogue, pronunciation feedback, and exercise content.

Ownership: AI-generated outputs are provided to you for your personal learning use. We do not claim copyright over individual AI-generated sentences or translations, but we do claim ownership over the curated selection, sequencing, and pedagogical framing of that content within our lessons.

Accuracy: AI-generated Finnish and Swedish content is routed through our verification layer, but errors may still occur. Do not rely on AI output for medical, legal, or professional purposes.

    4. Open Vocabulary Data — Your Rights

The vocabulary backbone is built on open ontologies from the National Library of Finland via Finto:

    • YSO (General Finnish Ontology) — CC BY 4.0
    • ALLFO (Swedish interface to YSO) — CC BY 4.0
    • TERO (Health Sciences Ontology) — CC BY 3.0

These datasets are not ours to restrict. You may extract, reuse, and redistribute the Finto-sourced fields (finto_* columns, concept URIs, pref/alt labels) under the original CC BY terms, with attribution to the National Library of Finland.

    How to credit when reusing

    Copy and adapt this attribution:

Vocabulary data sourced from Finto.fi, published by the
National Library of Finland under CC BY licenses:
    • YSO (General Finnish Ontology) — CC BY 4.0
      https://finto.fi/yso/en/
    • ALLFO (Swedish interface to YSO) — CC BY 4.0
      https://finto.fi/yso/sv/
    • TERO (Health & Welfare Ontology) — CC BY 3.0
      https://finto.fi/tero/en/

You must name the source, link to the license, and not apply additional restrictions. See Data sources & licenses for full details and downloadable CSV inventory.

    5. Data Protection & Privacy

We use anonymous device identifiers to persist learning progress without requiring an account. If you do create an account, your device data can be linked to your user profile via the account-linking flow.

    We do not:

    • Sell your personal data or reflections to third parties.
    • Use your voice recordings for training AI models without explicit consent.
    • Share your learning progress with advertisers.

Audio recordings are processed via OpenAI's Whisper API for transcription and are not retained by OpenAI for model training (as of our latest understanding of their retention policy). We store transcriptions only to display them back to you.

    AI data handling for reflections

When you record or write a reflection, here is exactly what happens to your data:

    • Text reflections: Stored in our database linked to your device ID (or account, if signed in). Used only to display your reflection back to you and, optionally, to generate AI feedback or categorization.
    • Voice recordings: The original audio file is uploaded to our secure storage bucket. A signed URL lets you play it back. The audio is sent to OpenAI's Whisper API for transcription; we store the resulting text transcript. The audio file itself remains in our storage until you delete it.
    • AI analysis: If enabled, the reflection text (either original or transcribed) may be sent to Gemini or another AI model via the Lovable AI Gateway to generate feedback, categorization, or follow-up prompts. These requests are not used to train the AI model.
    • Retention: Reflections persist until you choose to delete them. If you delete a reflection, both the database record and the stored audio file are removed within 30 days.

    How to request deletion

You can delete individual reflections at any time from the Reflections page (use the trash icon on any entry). For a one-click bulk wipe of all reflections and voice recordings tied to this device, use our self-serve Delete my data page. For broader account-level deletion, contact us with your device ID or registered email — we will confirm within 7 business days.

    6. Shared Glossary Contributions

When you add an entry to the shared glossary, you grant us a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive license to host, display, and distribute that contribution within the service and any community exports.

If your entry incorporates a Finto concept, the Finto-sourced fields remain governed by the upstream CC BY license. Your original additions (pedagogical notes, examples) are your work, licensed to us as described above.

    7. Enforcement & Takedown

If you believe content in the shared glossary or elsewhere on the service infringes your intellectual property rights, contact us with:

    • A description of the copyrighted work or right being infringed.
    • The exact location (URL or entry ID) of the material.
    • Your contact information and a good-faith statement.

We will review and, if appropriate, remove or disable access to the material promptly.

    8. Changes to This Page

We may update these IP and usage rights guidelines. Material changes will be reflected by updating the "Last updated" date above. Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance.
